If you follow us on ‘socials’ you may have seen a quiz we shared of the seven artists (below) of Ghanaian heritage who took to the stage at last week’s Glastonbury event (25-29 June).
Glastonbury is the biggest music festival in the UK with people travelling from all over the world to attend the event in Somerset, South West England.
We scoured this year’s line up and it’s always great to see more Black representation. It’s even better to see more artists and public figures with Ghanaian heritage.
We asked you to see how many you could name - so in case you didn’t get them all, do check out the list below.
1. Amaarae
While Ghana marked the new national holiday for Republic Day on 4 July, Amaarae aka Ama Serwah Genfi also celebrated - it was her 31st birthday.
The US-born Ghanaian singer and songwriter is known for her fusion of pop, R&B, Afrobeats, and alté, and wrote her first song at the tender age of 13.
Her discography includes EP Passionfruit Summers, her debut album The Angel You Don't Know, and second album is Fountain Baby. She has collaborated with a number of Ghanaian musicians including Stonebwoy, Kojey Radical, M3NSA, Santi, Blaqbonez, Buju, Odunsi, and B4bonah.
On April 14, Amaarae made history as the first Ghanaian artist to perform a solo set at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in the USA.
Carys Afoko
Gender justice campaigner and award-winning communications professional Carys Afoko was one of a number of public figures panellists speaking about ‘Feminism in the Age of the Manosphere’ at Glastonbury.
She is the executive director and co-founder of Level Up, a community for feminists who want to work together to end sexism.
She started out in corporate communications, managing the reputation of companies like Universal Music, Eurostar and BlackBerry. She left to become Head of Communications at the New Economics Foundation, raising the profile of campaigns on banking reform, sustainability and economic justice. Before joining the team she was working for Shadow Civil Society Minister and MP for Wigan Lisa Nandy.
Carys is the author of Framing the Economy, which looks at the communications and framing of austerity in the UK.
3. AdjuaSings
Adjua is a Welsh-Ghanaian alt-RnB vocalist and self-taught guitarist from Splott in Cardiff. She has been making music since 2021, and with genres that include Latin, Funk and Indie. Adjua released her debut EP called Self in 2023.
4. Raye
Born in Tooting, South London but raised in Croydon, Rachel Agatha Keen aka Raye is a multi-award-winning a British singer-songwriter. Raye was born on 24 October 1997 to a Ghanaian-Swiss mother and an English father.
You may remember that she made history after winning six awards (the most ever in a single ceremony) at the 2024 Brit Awards. She accepted the awards with her Ghanaian grandmother Agatha, who she is named after. Her debut album My 21st Century Blues in 2023.
K.O.G
Kweku Sackey aka K.O.G (Kweku of Ghana) is a singer, percussionist, arranger, bandleader and art director. Born in Accra, Ghana, but currently living in Sheffield, UK, he uses a mix of English, Pidgin and Ga to deliver is signature style of music.
K.O.G is the leader of afro-fusion collective K.O.G & The Zongo Brigade. He is also the singer and frontman of ONIPA, and co-founder of Zongo Music – a collective for alternative music, based in the UK and Ghana. Don’t Take My Soul is his latest album, which was released in September 2024.
6. Jeremiah Asiamah
Jeremiah Asiamah is a DJ who plays music genres including Garage, Funky, House, Trap, Bashment. He has shared a line-up with names including Kojo Funds, Mist, Cadet at a past Glastonbury Festival.
7 DJ Devolicious and Booty Bass
DJ Devolicious is a Koforidua flower, who currently resides in the UK. She plays across genres including Afrobeats, Latin, Bashment, UK Funky, 90s, Tribal & Bass and has played at field festivals such as Shambala, Glastonbury, Super Spirit, Bristol Pride.
Booty Bass is a collective of female DJs established in 2018 to showcase female DJs.
