Ghana loses a broadcasting legend
Legendary broadcaster for the BBC World Service and the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation Mike Eghan passed away in the early hours of Wednesday 5 June aged 89.
Known as The Magnificent Emperor, he hosted the programme Music With African Beat in the 1960s and was famously photographed by another legend - photographer James Barnor outside Piccadilly Circus in 1967.
He returned to Ghana and worked for GBC amongst other ventures which included a dabble in politics. He was also the MC at the iconic music festival Soul to Soul in 1971, in Accra which included performances from Wilson Pickett, the Staple Singers and Ike and Tina Turner.
His memoirs are recorded in his autobiography ‘The Emperor’s Story - From The Centre of The World’.
In 2022, he and Uncle James Barnor were the subject of a play called DRUM by Jacob Roberts-Mensah of Our Day Media - a reimagining of their first encounter in the late 60s Dear Uncle Mike, you will be sorely missed.
May you rest in perfect peace.
